At Genesee Energy, we understand that many of our home heating customers are looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. We get many questions about Bioheat and biodiesel. Here are some answers to the most frequent questions:

Bioheat is an environmentally friendly home-heating fuel. Using Bioheat helps to reduce your family’s carbon emissions, while still providing your West Seattle home with the warm and cozy heat you get from using regular fuel oil.

Biodiesel is a clean-burning, renewable fuel that is blended with standard heating oil to make Bioheat. The biodiesel used in Genesee Bioheat blends is made from recycled cooking grease, taken from Seattle-area restaurants. Biodiesel can also be made from natural sources such as palm or soybean oil, algae, or animal fat. Biodiesel is as biodegradable as sugar, less toxic than table salt, and safe for home use.

We offer B25 (25% biodiesel), B50 (50% biodiesel), and B99 (99% biodiesel) Bioheat blends – all of which produce fewer carbon emissions than natural gas. The higher the blend number, the lower your carbon output. Any blend of Bioheat can be used in your existing furnace. Bioheat blends seamlessly with the fuel you have in your tank, so there’s no need to drain it. But we recommend you start with B25 and work up to B99 (our cleanest-burning blend), so we don’t put too much stress on your filters all at once.

No. You don’t need to make any modifications to your existing oil-burning furnace or buy a new one to use Bioheat. And since the biodiesel in Bioheat acts as a natural cleaning agent for your system, using Bioheat can actually help to extend the life of your furnace.

Bioheat currently costs a few pennies more per gallon than standard heating oil, but the price is expected to go down over the next decade. As more people start using biodiesel for home heating, more refineries will start making it, and it will become cheaper. Also, since Bioheat is made locally, its price is more stable than heating fuel made from oil that is purchased overseas. Using Bioheat helps to reduce America’s dependence on foreign oil, thus helping to reduce our trade deficit.
